UNITED STATES – A little more is known about the assailant who injured three people before committing suicide on the Youtube campus in California on Tuesday (April 3rd). According to a police statement from San Bruno, as well as several American media, the suspect, discovered on the ground “carrying gunshot wounds that she seems to have inflicted on herself ” was 38 years old and named Nasim Najafi Aghdam.
Living in San Diego, she claimed to be vegan and “hated Youtube”. She was herself youtubeuse “prolific” and had several channels in several languages.
Nasim Najafi Aghdam was a vegan activist and published very hard videos showing animal cruelty. On its website, the thirty-something accused the platform of “filtering” its videos to prevent it from obtaining “views”, especially since the new monetization policy to filter more and more video content .
“I’m discriminated against and filtered on Youtube, and I’m not the only one,” she says in a video re-released by NBC and spotted by Mashable . “My old videos that received a lot of ‘views’, have ceased to be visible, because I’m filtered,” she continues. On her website, she claims to have at least four Youtube channels, one in English and three in Farsi and Turkish.
According to her brother, Shahran Aghdam, interviewed by The Mercury News , “she constantly complained that Youtube ruined her life”. Her father also explained that she was still “angry” because of that.
Shahran Aghdam also explained that his family, who came from Iran, moved to California in 1996 and his sister lived with his grandmother in San Diego. According to the media, the young woman should have celebrated her birthday on Wednesday, April 4th.
“No evidence” that she knew her targets personally
Several days before the shooting, the family of Nasim Aghdam had reported the disappearance of the young woman. The police had finally found her Tuesday morning, asleep in her car, according to Mashable .
“At present, there is no evidence that the attacker knew the victims of this shooting or that individuals were specifically targeted,” said police San Bruno in a statement.
Four people were injured, according to local police. The San Francisco General Hospital spokesman confirmed that three patients had been cared for in the facility: a 36-year-old man in critical condition; a 32-year-old woman in serious condition; and a 27-year-old woman. A fourth person was hit in the leg while running away.
